In this series at Everything Orient, we take a look back at ex-Orient players and see where their careers have taken them since their departure from Brisbane Road.
Player Profile
Liam Kelly is a Scottish midfielder who was the captain and club record signing in Orient's relegation season in League Two, and has played all around England and Scotland in his career so far.
Where Have They Been?
Liam Kelly’s career started his career with MK Dons, his hometown, as part of their youth team but left in 2008 as the club could not afford to pay his contract for the first team. He signed his first professional contract at Kilmarnock in 2009, where he would stay for four years – scoring 15 goals in 100 games.
While playing at Kilmarnock, Liam Kelly won the Scottish League Cup Final, however, unfortunately he lost his father shortly before lifting the trophy. This death caused Kelly to miss a lot of games for Kilmarnock and in 2013 Kelly signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with Bristol City.
Kelly only played 21 games in his two years at Bristol where he featured for the Championship side. In 2014, Liam signed for Oldham Athletic and was made club captain. Across his two seasons at Oldham, he played 78 games and scored 7 goals.
In July 2016, Leyton Orient signed Liam Kelly for a club record £200,000. In Orient’s 3-2 win at Plymouth in February 2017, Kelly was reported to the FA for pushing a ball boy to the floor and received a six-match ban for this offense. He only made 21 appearances in the O’s relegation season where he stood as captain, scoring 4 goals.
Where Are They Now?
Following Orient’s relegation to the National League, Kelly signed for Coventry City in 2017. Kelly managed to secure promotion back into League One for the Sky Blues, and has currently played 40 games for them, scoring just a single goal so far.
