On This Day: Leyton Orient 4 - 0 Doncaster, 1989

As the 1988/89 reunion draws near, it seems highly appropriate to look at a game they played that season.

The game in question was played on a cold, rainy, Leyton tuesday night in March 1989. Doncaster were the opposition and they did not put up much of a fight, losing 4-0.

The goals came from Steve Castle, Lee Harvey, Kevin Campbell (a great player for the O's thats season while on loan from Arsenal) and Alan Comfort, meaning that he had scored three in three games and took his season's total up to 13.

Orient's win meant they had won three on the bounce, scoring 8 and conceding none - not bad, ey?

The team that day was; Heald, Howard, Dickenson, Hales, Day, Sitton, Baker, Castle, Harvey, Campbell and Comfort - pretty much the team that would win the O's promotion.

Manager Frank Clark had nothing but praise for the Orient fans that night saying:

"It was marvellous that almost 3,000 people [2,824 to be precise] turned out in the conditions, although in spite of the wind and the rain I am sure that the majority of you enjoyed the game and the result."

Perhaps the only one who didn't welcome the game was groundsman Charlie Hasler, who had to nurse the pitch ahead of the following days reserve game at home to Cambridge (a 1-0 loss).

Six days later Brizzy would welcome Hartlepool and Rochdale three days later. Aylesbury United reserves were welcomed three days later and Super Cooper scored a brace - perhaps he was preparing for a very important goal he would have to score roughly 2 months later...

I don't think anyone needs to reminded of how Orient finished the season. I'm sure O's fans would like to stay clear of the play-offs this year, but only in the occurrence the we gain automatic promotion!

Meanwhile, this season Doncaster are guaranteed to beat where they finished that season, 30 years ago, where they finished one place (and seven points) above the relegation zone.
