A Game to Remember: Conor Wilkinson
The big number nine ran his socks off and showed off his quick feet on several occasions as the O’s sought the equaliser in the second half. He got the goal that kept us in the game and was visibly frustrated not to have gotten at least a point.
He was also impressive in the second half of the game against Crewe in midweek. His ability to hold up play and bring other players into the attack is clearly solid, but he needs a strike partner to link up with.
Honourable Mentions: George Marsh and Louis Dennis
The Spurs loanee continues to impress with his running in midfield, breaking up play and linking between defence and attack.
Dennis got himself in the right positions to score goals but couldn’t keep the ball down with his two best chances. But if he can keep finding space in those areas, the goals will come.
Opinion
The worst possible start was followed by a pretty insipid response as Orient dropped deeper and deeper, inviting on the inevitable second for Colchester.
Somehow we managed to get a goal to go in 2-1 down, giving us a chance to get back into the game in the second half.
We created some good chances in the second half, and if we’d taken them we could have had a point at least from the game.
It is quite hard to believe given the way we performed that we scored in the first half but not the second. Ross Embleton said after the game, we made too much work for ourselves in the first half and he was right.
Orient need to stop the Jekyll and Hyde routine and perform at their best consistently. A good result - however badly we play on the day - against Port Vale next Saturday would be a big confidence boost.
